#BoatLife #Sailing #Remote #IslandLife
No matter where in the world we end up, if there are people, there will be food and supplies. It just may not be what we are used to or, worst case, the exact part our foreign vessel needs.
The more time we spend sailing and living in remote places, the more our ideas of what we really need and find pleasure in, evolves. Because experience and hindsight are semantically related.
Our need to fill the bilge with beer, beans, and rice has diminished. But there are some things we still stock up on when we find them or pay the big bucks to ship across an ocean and wait patiently on.
Because how we stock and provision our boat has a lot to do with what food and supplies we will have access to along our journey.
This is why we’re taking you shopping today. It’s potential foresight for our fellow sailors on a similar route and because it’s fascinating to see what is and isn’t available on such a faraway land.
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

Tabrizi BusinessTabrizi Business2 ditë më parë
    • Don't you leave your house unattended? Same thing. The door locks. Almost all boats that get stolen are small boats & PWC that are on unlocked trailers, so unless it is a super-high-end yacht it's just not worth the effort to steal a boat at anchor. Sure, you could haul the anchor by hand and probably hotwire the engines, but top speed is only about 8 knots/9mph so you're not going to get far, & there are only so many channels/routes you can take so your likelihood of getting caught is extremely high. There are way easier less risky ways to have a successful life of crime. Curious Minion

    • For the most part they don't get mail and packages. The had to replace one computer (because both of their laptops ended up dying!) and it took just over a week to have it FedExed from the U.S.A., the shipping alone cost $250 U.S., and then they had to pay about 40% of the value in import duties and taxes. It was a really expensive laptop. Curious Minion

  • Sounds like it'd be cheaper to just fly to New Zealand and purchase a laptop and other items instead of shipping........but not sure what the price of the flight is though? I'm sure this has been thought of so wondering if that'd be a feasible option (outside of Covid restraints). Y'all have an idea if that works?

Matthew HendersonMatthew Henderson3 ditë më parë
    • Except for the Covid-19 border restrictions. There are no flights out of Tonga and they'd have to quarantine in NZ anyway, and then they couldn't get back to Tonga..... Curious Minion

  • I have a question, how do you dispose your garbage and human waste on a boat? I am just curious.

Angeles TrejoAngeles Trejo8 ditë më parë
    • Garbage is multi-part. 1st is to not take it on the boat to begin with. Buy stuff that's fresh & doesn't come in a lot of packaging. Compostable food garbage can be thrown overboard if it's first chopped to small pieces (and of course you want to be considerate of your neighbors and watch the tide). Non-food garbage is simply brought it to shore with you. Most dinghy docks keep trash cans for cruisers to use. As for human waste, most boats have a "black tank" where that's stored. Most countries have a limit (3 miles from shore, 5 miles from shore....) and if you're outside that limit you can simply pump the black tank into open water. If you're inside that limit you have to have the tank pumped out at a marina or boat yard. Some boats (like Curiosity) also have one or more composting toilets. Outside the limit, the compost can simply be dumped overboard. Inside the limit, it can be bagged and taken to shore with the other garbage (yes that's legal and safe to do). Curious Minion

  • You can solve the Toilet Paper problem with a device called "Clear Rear". During the tp shortage/hoarding last year I installed one and it only took about 20 minutes. A "Y" in the water line and you are all set. Sort of a bidet for the Bum! Works great. Better than TP.

  • It's my understanding that the electrical systems in Tonga, Samoa and most of Fiji is the same as the Australian and New Zealand system (230-240 volts, 50Hz) With the same style of wall outlets, plugs and lamps etc. That means Pacific Islanders who visit Aust/NZ for seasonal work etc, can carry appliances back with them. Of one grocery item I noticed, the cheap brand of dried Sultanas, the price is almost exactly double the NZ price. I saw "Marmite" in the speciality store. All the Marmite for the NZ, Australian and one assumes the Pacific Islands market, is made right here in Christchurch NZ (note Marmite is similar to Vegemite and Promite brands, so a slightly salty flavoured spread, made from yeast extract, residue of beer brewing).

It took me a few minutes to figure out why it looked funny too. I just noticed it looked different for some reason. I walked around it twice before I realized it was that the motor was missing! 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
