#BoatLife #Refit
Life on the hard. That's what we yachties call it when our boat is out of the water on dry land. Why? I can only assume because living on a sailboat out of the water is hard.
I am thrilled to report the cleaning is done and Curiosity is ready for liveaboards once again! Join us as we make the transition back to full-time boat life, take you on a tour of the yard, and explain how we live on a boat when it's hauled out of the water and sitting on the hard.
WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

Hey everyone! Hopefully we didn’t miss anything about life “on the hard”. If there’s anything else you need to know, please ask in the comments below. Composting Toilet, Water Purification, WiFi, whatever…we’re happy to share. Living at the boat yard isn’t as good as being on the water, but it’s not half bad, and it gives us motivation to splash CURIOSITY as quick as we can. As always, Nikki’s shared some additional tips and links on our blog: www.gonewiththewynns.com/living-boat-yard 💘 Jason & Nikki
Ok!.
Welcome Home to your wonderful gal!! I'm an Aussie & am able to send over any connectors you need; I'm sure other Patreon members from Australia will be willing to help out too. Just let us know if there is anything specific you need to help you out. By the time it gets to you, you'll be sailing for our shores; but I wanted to offer anyway xxx :)
Bloopers!!! That's the way you are gonna grow your channel to the next level! Love it! Keep it up!
What are your plans for once you hit the water since a lot of countries are not allowing yachts to shelter there (Zatara has been taking about their issues )
Would you swap out your remaining seawater toilets for composting ones if money was not an issue, or do they offer a valuable alternative stil? PS love your videos!
❤
What's the model on this catamaran?
www.gonewiththewynns.com/curiosity-sailboat
Hope nobody locks you in the toilet.
Love your videos. So raw and so useful. Thanks for sharing.
Nikki is now my favorite tarbender...she makes those sunset boat drinks look delicious.🍹🍸 Hey, Jason...She's a keeper! 😉😎
It's been a while since you posted the video, but as I was watching it I was curious if anybody else was living in their boat while you were? Is there an onsite caretaker? Having packed up my home and living in temporary accommodations for the past nearly 3 years, I get the excitement at being in your old quarters with your own stuff. I was able to get my silverware and dishes out of storage for my current living situation, and I was so excited to use my own silverware!
At the very least, Johnny was living in his boat - I'm not sure if there were others. www.gonewiththewynns.com/boat-tour-electric-escape-pod But the Happy Hour gathering at the end of this video seemed to be a regular gathering of people, so maybe! And yes, being back in your own bed with your own stuff is worth any hoops you have to jump through to do it! Curious Minion
A lot of people catch and use rainwater in Australia as well. The community where we live is not on a mains supply and we currently have two 5,000 gallon poly tanks which we use to store catchment that is employed exclusively for drinking (boiled first), cooking and washing clothes. We have an old well that is 30 feet deep out the back and it supplies flush water for the toilet as well as water for the garden, washing vehicles etc.
Looks like the Noco Genius Pro line can do a range of input voltage (100-240VAC) 🤔
I could not agree more about the composting toilet! Why do we flush our sh*t with one of our most precious resources??
I made I own composting toilet for my home ,four years ago I have saved Soooooo! Much water . Great video again 👏
I've been watching Eamon and Bec for years but have only just found your channel today (and am loving it) so when you mentioned their names I was so thrown for a second lol!
Jason. The Reverse Polarity is an easy fix. Just make a custom dog-bone adapter with the hot and neutral reversed. That should solve your problem with the shore power down under.
You two are freakin` awesome cool!
Great video! Happy to see you two talking about your composting toilet on the boat. I found you through your composting toilet videos for the RV. Would be great to see a full one for the boat as well. After 8 years of use, is there anything you don't like about them?
hi guys from france, how much does it cost to let the boat in dry berth per month?
You guys always make me laugh 😆
Can composting toilets be used in my house?
They can be used anywhere you have power to run the small vent fan. For more info, go here and click on the "composting toilet" tab. www.gonewiththewynns.com/living-off-grid-rv-sailboat Happy holidays! Curious Minion
Just want to point out that the filmography skills has increased. The boat/drone scene actually impressed me. Awesome job.
When you’re in a marina is the grey water issue a problem? Does discharging grey water and it’s contaminants pose a problem in a congested area like that?
If you have 220 volts all you need is to split to 120 just used 1 live contac and the common in the 220 plug you will have120
Am I missing this? Where is the link for the gravity water filter Nikki was using? Would love one for our setup!
Whenever you want more info like links (some with discount codes!), artist names, etc. just click over to the corresponding blog post. The link to the filters is there. Curious Minion
found it myself :) www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Products-SP129-Filtration-Squeezable/dp/B00B1OSU4W/ref=sxin_10
I'm glad you still love the composting toilet! When I bought my little 30' Cal sailboat, the previous owner had removed the marine head, leaving just a miserable porta-potty. I'm sure I was a bit influenced by your purchase, so we installed a composting toilet, an Airhead instead of a Nature's Head because it had a hull-shaped option that worked for us. It has been fantastic! My SO is about to begin renovating a 1969 Airstream, and he will be installing a composting toilet because we've had such a good experience with it. So, thank you again for sharing unusual ideas.
hi there. great start on the fitout wynns. would you have an email or whatsapp for the boatyard in Vavauu?
Thank goodness I pay for my ALworld..... those commercials would kill me. No way I would stay subscribed if I had to deal with the amount of commercials.
u never showed us how u get on and off the boat
@Gone with the Wynns lol
Ladder at the back to the sugar scoops. Curious Minion
"You don't want to watch us unpack - so I saved you" You WILDLY underestimate my boredom levels this year 😂
I'd gladly watch a 4 hour uncut video of you guys just hanging out - it's nice to feel included in these times!!
We also have a composting toilet! It’s wonderful because we stay near shore, on the hook, most often, and it’s wonderful and nearly maintenance free!
Jason, your shore power port is wired for 240VAC 60Hz single phase, 50Amp, correct? What was shore power in the Bahamas, Panama, and Equador?
Wanted to mention a couple episodes back a possible fix for your fuel tanks. They have aluminum "brazing rods" that require only a small torch. I'm no welder, but the idea is you seal the tank holes by filling in with the rods. There are lots of ALworld vids on this. A real welder could advise.
Hi, I am a new sub so I am trying to catch up. Anyhow, I came to this video so I could try to give you a good mold killer cleaner that works well for us in the US (coastal New Hampshire). I don't know if you can get the ingredient's but if you mix 1 gallon of water, 1 cup of apple cider vinegar, and Dawn dish liquid it is magic on mold and mildew. hope it helps 👍👍👍
Love seeing Nicky clapping, so genuine happiness right there :) Kudos for Mr Frankenstein!
Amarula!👌
Lovely to see you back at home and having a look at how everything we take for granted on land works on a boat in the yard!
Passionately keen on composting toilets! The Western world will undoubtedly go that way - the sooner the better. It really isn't bad to deal with.
Hi Guys, Curiosity looks well, we can see the hard work already put in on her but I can't wait till you get back to the water, ... Do you have to be out before Cyclone Season or is that a wishful date for ye ? Stay Safe & Fair Winds !!
Cyclone season started Nov. 1. Their insurance will cover them in Tonga though. There's really no place else they can go except Fiji, and Tonga is actually a better place to ride out cyclone season. Curious Minion
Lol if your power situation is "Frankensteined" most of my stuff is "Frankensteined" it gets the job done but could be "proper"
Hey Chris. I don't think he's back home yet, but he has gotten a supply of his meds from AZ and is back to taking his regular dose. I believe he had an offer on the boat and is probably waiting in Fiji until the sale can be finalized, and then he'll head home. You can follow the Wynns on FB or IG for real-time updates - that's where Mark news will pop up first! Curious Minion
I am very glad your finally back to your home i too have been displaced due to covid, its hard to live in an older travel trailer in the winter so im at the in laws til spring (covid wiped out our income and savings) im so glad that your back to you catamaran. I have been watching since april this year following your saga just to get home wow. Speaking of how is your friend fairing now? Did he ever get home to his wife? I really hope they are well.
When can you get back on the water and where to next?
welcome back home! i looked up the price of a boat like this, its very close to half a million dollars, did i just bring up the wrong website or are you two that Rich?
@Gone with the Wynns oh i guess Nikki and jason has someone to answer comments for them. i thought i get a direct answer from them!
Catamarans in good shape aren't cheap, but the Wynns aren't rich either: just frugal & hard working. You can see what they paid for their boat here if you're curious: www.gonewiththewynns.com/exhausting-journey-buying-cruising-sailboat Curious Minion
You are the reason we bought a Natures Head...
Please start uploading to Rumble. It's a great platform and will help you monetize your content even more. And, I'm sick of liberal ALworld. Thanks!
ALworld is Liberal? Methinks you are mistaken.
luv it that u back on ur boat. u dont boil Rain water? what r Boat yard fees for a year? thks rox
Your boat is so cleaned up it looks new. A lot of hard work went into that but it must feel so good.
Awe your home at last 😍 and soon in the water🥳👍
Isnt that distilled water? I wouldn’t drink that for so long!
This is so interesting. Are there any others who are doing the same as you there?
Does being colour blind pose any problems when it comes to sailing at night? Navigation lights?
@Gone with the Wynns thank you for your answer.
Oooh - good question! I got so curious I had to stop my work clock & go investigate. In the most common forms of color blindness, shades of either blue and green or shades of red appear as a range of tans & browns. Since navigation lights on ships are green and red, one of them would look "correct" and the other would be brown, so they're still different colors and Jason would know by now which is which, so that adjustment would be pretty easy. Same with green & red aids to navigation (markers & buoys). The big problem I see is, if he is blue/green color blind, then all shades of water would be some shade of brown to him. This is a problem in warmer climates where the deepest waters are shades of blue, mid-depths are shades of green, and really shallow water appears brown. If you're blue/green colorblind and it *all* looks brown, that would make it really difficult to navigate inshore. I'm guessing that's why Nikki does most of the piloting inshore. As for night vision, some forms of color blindness actual do help you see better at night because your eyes have more rods than cones. Who knew!! Thanks for the question! Curious Minion
The electricity thing is stupid. Boat builders should know that people will be sailing between different systems/voltages. There should be at least the option to have those converters built into the boats electrical system so that this type of issue doesn't arise. I've seen a lot of videos where people will at the very least make a comment about voltage and charging batteries and sometimes even the plugs (the builders should be able to make that a fairly simple switch for the owners, too). I'm glad you were able to figure out a way to at least get a trickle charge. Congratulations on being back home.
Saw this thought I would share alworld.info/u/video/c5TbyJmesKWTeL8
I love that pretty top you're wearing in the opening shot!!
in the Philippines it is called calamansi well the small ones are .
Dish man well done. Life is good. Thank you for sharing. Buen Camino.
i was waiting for the flex mate lol you ladies deserve to forget the garnish and glass, both grab a bottle and chug chug CHUG! To getting your sanity back.🤗🙃😜
Exercising...no....dancing.....no....convolution quick call 911
Do you have air conditioning in your bedroom?
@Gone with the Wynns Got to get that fixed......need AC in the tropics
They have a borrowed portable unit at the moment to try to dry the boat out, but the AC unit installed on the boat is broken. Curious Minion
How about those purple windows? Is that something you consider correcting? I assume requiring replacement???
Pretty nifty that you can lock people IN the bathroom, too! 😁😦
I've been using a Sunmar composting toilet in my home for 25 years already. It's a great way to go. I've got one for my boat and i'll install it in the spring. Great video guys ! Cheers
Have 3 composting heads and am a walking ad for Nature's Head (have too many boats). Found myself gushing forth to the Marina manager today and referring her to your videos. Voila! I find that today YOU are gushing about said toilet. A little dizzy to be singing hymns to a toilet, but I totally get it. Composting Heads Yeah!
Scene setups, multi-perspective shots and drone shots are amazing. Do you have a 100 person Netflix crew producing this for you?
I wish! 💙💛💙
Our pit bulls go crazy over the drone. They have snatched it out of the air a few times. Still flies lol. Dji magic mini. I call it.
😆😆
Awesome 😊
It's so interesting hearing you talk positively about the Natures Head, we ABSOLUTELY HATED ours after using it for a year full time on our tiny house. Ended up getting a refund on it and putting in a really simple, non-separating bucket system that is so much easier to empty and maintain for us. We had major issues with the solids getting too wet and not composting at all, the urine tank not being able to clean effectively, fly infestations through the fan...the list goes on. I think this toilet is probably a good option if you're using it sporadically as the solids have a chance to break down but I definitely don't recommend it for us land lubbers as a full time toilet solution. So much happier with our bucket system for that!
Really glad to see you two in your own boat. WE know you have been though a lot. But you both are beautiful!!!!
Hallo, how long you reckon will it be before you going to hit the waters
were are your cats
You must have missed this vid: www.gonewiththewynns.com/sailing-pets-goodbye 😥 Spoiler alert: Singa is super happy with his new family and even has a girlfriend! Curious Minion
"Welcome Home" says the beautiful and gorgeous Curiosity. She was also kinda lonely without you guys and the cats😜😜😜😜
Funny story... I was deployed to Kenya back in 2005 and my medic introduced me to this wonderful liqueur, Amarula. I loved it and bought a bunch to bring back to the states thinking I'd only be able to get it in Africa. While visiting my fiancee in New Jersey after my return I was dismayed to walk into a liquor store and see Amarula on the shelf, for LESS than I paid for it in Kenya! Lesson learned: Never underestimate capitalism when it comes to good booze!
Long road back lots of work. A job well done congratulations. It must feel strange sleeping on the boat in dry dock. No waves :)
Your American appliances are designed for 60 cycles, some 50 or 60 cycles. If some motors are running hot and slow, that is because you have 50 cycles in Tonga.
Maybe you should sharpen those kitchen knives....
nice introductory drone footage
Love the Sawyer filter! I've been using mine for backpacking for years and it's such an elegant solution.
Are COVID restrictions keeping you on the hard still??
Nope, just a looooong list of chores & repairs!
My first question was going to be about your 1&2’s but there you go!
Congrats! Am definitely thinking of a composting toilet, esp since we've already managed to overflow our holding tank this summer with no marinas having facilities open, and no overboard discharge allowed in the great lakes! Regarding the lithium batteries, I'd be more worried about getting them to 100% all the time rather than discharging them below 50%. Lithium batteries are happiest between 20-80% soc.
It depends on the make. If they're Battle Born batteries (for example), they are good all the way to 100% as they have headroom built in, if that makes sense. Their BMSes also level out the cells when held at 100% for a period of time - not that you'd need to do that regularly. But yeah, it doesn't hurt to have them under 100%, unless you need as much power as you can get. :)
I noted a while ago that Nikki looks like Audrey Hepburn. I finally figured it out for Jason. He's the spitting image of Bob Eubanks. www.liveabout.com/thatd-be-the-butt-bob-3299760
Hey guys how about flexible solar panel torture test review video, I'm pretty sure yours qualify
Love our home-built composting toity (Natures Head etc wouldn't fit the boat, as most are very tall). Also, we've lived on rainwater in our home for 18 years. It is splendid for drinking and cooking, and quite easy to make safe. Bit of unscented Clorox (1/4 cup per 60 gal) when we first wheel the barrel indoors; it kills everything living, then mostly offgasses. Then we pump water thru a 10, 5, and 0.5 micron filter (that last being a carbon block). Filters last 6 months or more.
I've been watching a lot of vids about Tiny Houses, and composting toilets are super common in them as well.
You answered a lot of questions that I had about the boatyard. Life is an adventure!
there's also a toilet that incinerates waste called the "incinolet", using either electricity or gas to convert it to pathogen free ash.
@Gone with the Wynns well, that would be a problem- all your power going to burning up your, er, well, you know. "Honey, do we any power left to actually do work?" "Nope- that internet guy suggested that damn new toilet we got!"
And it needs an amazing amount of power to do that. Not really workable for life off the grid. Curious Minion
I wish I would do more of the blue first or just I'll be happy when you guys get back on the water cuz it seems like you're happier now and I'm thankful for that God bless you all and I'm so thankful to see you guys finally back on your catamaran
What a great opportunity to get your Lightning Protection and Dispersion plan squared away. Three or more other boats have taken hits...SV Delos, Sailing into Freedom, and Parley Revival...
Congratulations on getting home on the boat. You guys crack me up. God Bless you.
Music is kickin...
Big step. Nice job making it all work!
Take care always!! Thank you for sharing this video! :)
A colour blind photographer? Wow. We call it a bird pepper, wash your hands before touching your eyes 😎🏁
We got the Natures ahead composting toilet after watching you guys years ago. We’re on our second rv with our second Natures Head.
Try a green papaya salad. Yum!
good video lovely nikki you look great. some of the things you showed me made me remember. when i was a little kid i would go visit my grandparents both sides. one side did have running water in the kitchen. neither had as we say feciltys. they had out houses. takes some getting use to. of course when you are a kid it don't matter also sometimes in the army when you have to go you would take your intrenching tool. dig a hole do your thing fill in the hole and be on your way. keep your smile nikki.........be water my friend
As long as you’re healthy, then everything is icing on the cake! ❤️
Is that a Hortsman trimaran you're parked next to?
Just a thought/question about your cleaning/de-molding process. Since the bugs/mold/dirt, etc. seemed to permeate everything, have you considered cleaning or perhaps even replacing your air cond. vents? It would be a shame to do all that work only to then blow that stuff around and re-contaminate the entire boat again. Not a trivial job I know but you've been so thorough and careful so far -
So. 2:01. Who's flying the drone??? That's an awesome shot!!
Just a big thanks for the entertainment....I grew up sailing a 30' Pierson with my family on east coast....Maine, Cape Cod, Nantucket.....anyway...now I live in New Mexico and the only thing I miss is sailing and the ocean....I get to live it vicariously with both of you and during these times of craziness with covid and election it has helped me to relax, get my mind off the hard stuff and watch you with open mind and the ability to think fast on your feet and solve problems sometimes without the things you need to fix them! People have no idea the work it takes to keep boats safe and functional and how easy it is lose things overboard! I also get seasick but I do not care....the reward of the trip is worth the heaving....I still remember crewing a 50' sloop many years ago in at least 40ft waves and throwing up for hours til it ended and then the rest of the nght we sailed into a full moon in calm waters...there are never words to describe the beauty and oneness with nature in those moments. There are rewards from the hard work that not that many people ever get to experience....good luck to you both.
Not gonna lie. You two have me on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what happens next.
While stationed in Italy off base, we had to use step-down for all our American appliances & equipment; One day I hear this loud noise & knew exactly what happened, a friend of our Daughter plugged the Vacuum into the wall to vacuum car;I knew exactly what happened, I ran like heck but not fast enough;it really suced for a few seconds then Dead...
Hello! Thank you for your wonderful videos! I was wondering about your new "bikes." I've been interested in a folding Blix bike since you highlighted it last year, but it doesn't look like you still have them. Can I ask why? Did you end up having trouble with them? Thanks and good luck with getting your wonderful home seaworthy again!
@Gone with the Wynns Oh, thank you! I'm sorry, I thought was up to date on all of the videos! Thank you for the link and info. I'll definitely shop through the link to help out the sailing kitty - every bit helps! I'll have to go back and make sure I see (and like) all of your episodes. Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge and experience. Fair winds!
Nikki talked about this a few videos ago. Basically, they loved the Blix bikes but they won't fit into any of the storage compartments aboard Curiosity. Read about it and see links to both bikes here: www.gonewiththewynns.com/boat-back-to-life Don't forget that shopping through the link in the post won't cost you anything extra but will throw a few pennies into the sailing kitty. And sometimes there are discount codes too. Happy shopping! Curious Minion
