Sailing is a never-ending thread of challenges that can make me feel like a total boss or the biggest idiot. We’ve been going through a bit of trial and error with figuring out our mooring situation. We still don’t have a solution, but we know of at least one more way it should NOT be done.

  • I know the mooring part of this video leaves a lot of unanswered questions, so I’ll do my best to explain a bit more. First off, we know how to tie up to a mooring, but what we’re trying to accomplish is figure out the BEST way to tie up our Leopard 43 to a mooring ball. Meaning: No chafe, easy to tie up upon approach and easy to release when it’s time to leave. This bridal test proved that it may be the best solution for no chafe but tying up and releasing was quite the hassle. Let me start by explaining this mooring. There are no lead lines on the mooring ball, so it is challenging to run lines through it from the boat unless there is no wind. Running an extra ‘retrieval’ line to the mooring does not work because any slack lines end up wrapped around the base of the mooring ball. Then the weight of our entire boat will be held by this one line. We already talked about running lines to the forward side cleats in the vid, but just as a reminder, it creates major chafe on the lines (not safe in a cyclone) and destroys the gelcoat on the boat. Plus, when getting pulled in strong winds it still creates massive downward pressure on the crossbeam which could still damage our rigging. A system like the Mantus mooring snap shackle would work for some mooring situations, but the attachment point on this mooring is a very thick line, and too thick for the Mantus Snap Shackle. Plus, the breaking strength of this snap shackle is 10T and I don’t know that I trust that with our 16T boat during a cyclone (but I will reach out to Mantus to see what they say). Sadly, it’s all a moot point because it’s nearly impossible to get things shipped here during COVID times. By the time it could arrive, cyclone season will be over and we'll be on our way to another country. What we need to get is an official statement from Leopard and Robertson & Caine (the boat builder). We need to hear how they recommend tying up our boat to a mooring, that way we’re not guessing, or using a jury-rigged solution that might not be covered by insurance if anything happens during a storm. With this information, we can feel confident we’re tying up to a mooring ball the correct way. And most importantly we know if another cyclone comes barreling through, we’ll be connected to the strongest points on the boat with no chafe issues. If we happen to break loose and the boat gets damaged, we can show our insurance company that we tied up the way the boat manufacture recommended.

    • Docking with a Cat is actually really easy and straight forward. As you stated, you basically have 2 options to attach, the outward hull cleats or the bridle point; the cleats on the transom are a boho for it. For all the below options you will need 2 mooring/docking lines. For the standard mooring layout you will attach the mooring/docking line at the clear with a bowline, it then goes through the loop of the mooring ball, or the mooring line on the ball, and then back to the cleat. If you are expecting a lot of wind and/or are actually able to reach the bridle attachments on the hull from the deck, you can attach the lines to the bridle points and then run them to the cleats; this will spread the load on the individual points. Setup: In your case Starboard side because that’s where the helm is Let’s go with the cleat option as that is the more “complicated” one. The lines need to run outside the hull and in front of the forestay, and not over the deck, all the way to where you are going to pickup the ball. How & where to pic up the mooring ball? You have 2 options here. 1. You pic up the ball between the hulls 2. You pic up the ball on the starboard side of the starboard hull. Depending how comfortable you are I find it often easier to pic up the ball on the outside of the hull as it allows you to go and push the hull against the ball, giving it less room to escape. Once you have picked up the ball with the hook, you run your pre-setup starboard line through the loop and pull it all through. This will allow you to and depending on the situation: 1- hold the ball with the line as to fit through the port line right away. 2-tie the ball up tight to the boat as to pic it up again and put the port line through. 3-drop the ball into the water and still be attached to it; could be because there is a lot of wind, engines failed, ..., but the important part is that you are attached to the ball with one line. Personally I normally go with option 2 as it gives you a lot of controle over the situation. So, with the starboard line tied up tight, you run the port line back to the cleat, out side the hulls, and you kind of can preset up how much slag you want to give it as in how much line you want it to have towards the ball. You then go back to the starboard line and easy it till boats lines are equidistant from the ball. If you feel that the port line is to short, you give the starboard line more slag and then go back to port to adjust; rinse and repeat till you are happy. The important part here is that the lines run out side the hull and than pivot into the middle and into the water around the bow. The bow being round and smooth with protect the lines from rubbing off and it will put less force on the cleats. I know some people are concerned that the lines with then start wearing off the bow; though true in essence it will take a LONG time before that happens and the lines I’ll have to be loaded ongoingly for that to happen. So if you happen then to moor a lot, I would make a protective cover that you can then drop between the lines and the hull; but from what I have heard from what and how often you moor it seems unnecessary to me.

    • With a cat, a good way to pick up the mooring ball is from the stern. Just get the mooring loop on the inside cleat, if a soft loop, or with a rope if a ring. Then take your time to use a dock line from the mooring ball to the bow. We use 2 dock lines, not our bridle. They are looped through the mooring loop so that the lines can be released from the boat, letting one end go and using the motor if necessary to pull through the rope through the loop if it won't pull by hand. To prevent chafe, could you fix those stainless plates to the key spots? (The long thin stainless metal of different lengths typically sold to stop rigging from chaffing). If it was me , i would just make a mooring bridle and anti chafe both the line and the deck with something. Maybe make a shorter bridle.

  • Iv been watching sailing videos for a couple years now, I know of your channel but for some reason have never really watched much. I'm not sure why? Maybe the size? no real reason now that I think about it. Sailing channels like yours have inspired me to learn to sail and film my adventure. The sailing part is amazing but filming and editing are killing me. I'm struggling with so many aspects of the storytelling and to top it off I found I had 2 good trips with my main GoPro having no audio as the mic had broken at some point... Today after sitting down to try and edit after nearly 6 weeks off (from editing) I decided I needed more inspiration., I wanted to compare some things like voice-over levels and editing formats to some of the bigger channels and see how they did it. I looked you up and have just watched a couple videos straight, Im hooked. You are both so lovely and funny and just nice people, I really enjoy your storytelling and how you both present or narrate. I can see why you have such a following, your videos are easy to watch and listen to. I'm now subscribed and have a fair bit of catching up to do. Fair winds!

  • Okay about the mooring. There is a handy tool that you can use to help you attached on the mooring. With the weather you have, you might look how secure the locking system is. My parents used something like that back when we had to keep our boat on mooring because the dock didn't have deep enough spot for us. And I think they have something like this still on their boat. The link is on Finnish marine shop page but I figured that once you know what you are looking you probably will be able to find it from store that is more convenient for you to use because from my understanding these are pretty common things to be used on boat. This is just one model and I'm also sure the will be ones that are better suited for handling tropical storms. I know I wasn't able to explain it very well but if you have some questions after checking the link I will try to figure out how to explain it in English lol . I hope this helps you some though with that issue. www.marinekauppa.com/tuote/handy-dock-teleskoopivenehaka-110-200cm/

  • Technically this is just like a Single Bouy Mooring (SBM). For big ship, a mooring boat or tugboat will assist to tie up to the SBM. For small boat what you can do is to have a long boat hook or better still an extra long boat hook to pick up the mooring line from the bouy. 1) Someone at the helm to move the boat slowly forward. 2) Someone at the bow to pick up the line. 3) Use handheld walkie talkie so you don't have to scream and shout at each other 4) pick up the mooring line using the boat hook and secure to your boat lines. 5) Add an additional line in the centre for easy retrieval for sailing off 6) you can use the winch for your anchor to pull the lines towards your boat for quick retrieval and can use the engine for astern movement once the line are released

I thought that maybe if I tried posting on a newer video you might see it. I want to tell you about 'L-Lysine" tablets because I think it has helped me with similar problems. I learned about it from someone who told her that her doctor recommended it instead of the shingles vaccine. I used to have problems if I ate too many peanuts or if I ate Kiwi in the strawberry season. I had to freeze the strawberries from my garden since I couldn't eat too many without feeling kind of 'ichy' inside. I also had problems with poison ivy rashes going blood borne quickly. You should do some research on the L-Lycine, even if your doctor solved your immediate problem because I noticed this summer that the poison ivy rash didn't go blood borne and I don't have a problem with peanuts. I take the L-Lysine along with my usual multi-vitamins and it is a product that can be purchased on line.

  • Ahhh....Nikki....I don’t think a dress was a good idea. Have u guys ever thought of investing in SCUBA gear? You’d b able to stay under longer.

    • They have dive gear and a compressor but freediving is a skill that will let you get closer to wildlife and there's less stuff to clean up too! Curious Minion

  • As a new sewer I laughed so much at the seam ripper bit. It’s my closest friend while I sew 😬🤣 I also bought myself a baby lock machine, so far I’m loving it.

  • Hello from Northern Minnesota at -28 below zero. Yuk !!!, I like your temperatures alot better. Just a question, why don't you anchor in a litle shallower water on this last anchoring?. 34 feet of water seems deep when you could have gone in a little more. I am not a sailor just was wondering if there was a reason, and I'm sure there is. Lol. Be safe and have fun..... :)
